Can Rabbits eat Ice?

The thing with rabbits is that when it comes to heat, they don’t respond to it very well. Because they have a thick coat of fur they are designed to stay insulated and so it is very easy for them to overheat.

So they love it when they have things to keep them cool during times when the sun is bearing down on them.

So if they are overheating can they be given ice to eat?

Yes they certainly can and it will help them to keep cool. It is perfectly fine for them to nibble on an ice cube. They may even enjoy having an ice cube rubbed on them if it gets really hot.

Remember ice is only frozen water which is the best kind of liquid for them.

As rabbits are more susceptible to heatstroke than humans then ice can help to keep them cool.

In winter if there is ice around then it is fine for rabbits to chew on it, it wont do them any harm. They will know what to chew and what not to chew.

If you are planning to give your rabbit some ice, just make sure it isn’t flavoured in any way, plain ice is fine for them. Any ice that has been flavoured with sugared juice is not good for them.
